Jesus came to seek and to save those who are lost and this young man had just been touched by God's love. Aleluya, what joy filled my heart to see many of these hardened criminals in jail for rape, murder and other crimes coming to Jesus. They were standing around us many of them weeping. Most of them had never met Christian police officers who showed them love and compassion. In fact, never in the history of this jail or the other ones we visited had Christian police officers come in uniform and ministered to these outcast of society. It was powerful and it was something only God could have arranged.
For this 10 day Law Enforcement Outreach mission we had been invited to Guatemala by the First Lady, Patricia de Arzu. She had planned our agenda and part of that was to minister to these juvenile delinquents ages 12 to 18. I was looking forward to meeting her since I had heard much about her and had seen the work she was doing among police, juvenile delinquents and orphanages. Our meeting with her was a great blessing. I asked her to share her testimony of how she had come to know Christ.
She told us that it was during a difficult time in her life about 10 years ago that she had prayed to receive Christ and how He had changed her life. We talked to her about our ministry and I told her of our desire to move to Guatemala to minister to the police and military. She invited us to come and live and minister among her people. She was excited that God was sending us to work among the police and military and she said she would help us in any way she could. As we prayed together and then left I couldn't help but think of what a wonderful confirmation that we were receiving from the Lord regarding our moving to Guatemala.
There is not enough room in this letter to tell you of all the wonderful things the Lord did during those 10 days. Our team was involved in training and ministering to over 2000 police officers. At least half of them responded publicly to an invitation to receive and follow Jesus Christ. We ministered in the two police academies in the nation, and we went to most of the police stations throughout the city. We openly preached Christ and these spiritually needy police officers responded. The fields may not be white unto harvest in many parts of the world yet, but they sure are in Guatemala. People are seeking the Lord and especially the police and military.
We preached the gospel to about 300 military officers and enlisted men belonging to the presidential guard and about half made a public decision for Christ. At one of the police academies after we had trained, ministered, and preached the gospel to over 500 cadets they crowded around me outside wanting to know more about the Bible and asking for passages they could write down and then read on their own. What hunger, what desire for the things of the Lord. We were offering the Bread of Life to starving people and Living Water to those who were thirsty. I saw faces change as the Light of the World came into the darkness of their hearts.
